Yes, social media lacks a critical vetting process.
In the book Ender's Game, written during the 80s, the author envisioned a global network in which there were online communities that had "rings" - and to get invited to an inner ring, one had to amass credibility.
That meant that only people with things worth listening to reached the inner rings.
But that too would promote echo chambers. I don't know what the solution is, but what we have is terrible.
