Yes!

These companies have created a new kind of infrastructure. Eminent domain applies. As near monopolies, they have no legitimate claim to protection from eminent domain.

Now that we all know of the value of Internet search, we all need it, and if we cannot have a pool of hundreds of competing services that keep each other honest, then we instead need to compel the to a high standard by defining them as a kind of utility; or, define a set of open standards that cannot be controlled by a single company, and we also need to break up the existing monopolies and block mergers.

The same applies to Facebook’s personal wall service. And Instagram’s moments-of-my-life service. And Slack’s discussion channel service.

Open standards — just like the telcos have so that AT&T can interoperate with Verizon and they can both interoperate with Vodaphone.

And we need to break up these companies so that they cannot control the system through their market size. If there are only a few providers, then they can still control you and get away with sneaky things because you don’t have enough alternatives.
