“Unfortunately for the would-be unifiers, this requires calling out the things which brought us to this point — capitalism, racism, broken institutions, sabotaged democracy…”
Yes, but the problem is that the leftist candidates are proposing “solutions” that many people don’t want. Most people don’t want radical change.
What most people would like to see is that the Left and the Right actually acknowledge each other’s concerns. Instead, each side takes the most extreme rhetoric of the other side and depicts that in all its absurdity.
If you are on the Left, you have legitimate concerns: you want immigrants treated like human beings, you want something done about gun violence, you want more income equality. If you are on the Right, you want to be able to keep your hunting rifle and have a handgun for protection in your rural home which is 20 miles from the nearest police station; you want to make sure that a tide of illegal immigrants do not flood the country and take the remaining jobs.
There are legitimate concerns on each side, but the Left and Right mock each other, instead of acknowledging the other side’s concerns and addressing those, and trying to compromise.
It is that toxic failure to acknowledge that is dividing us and destroying the fabric of our country.
And the author’s piece basically says, “The Left is right, so let’s ignore what the Right cares about”. That’s unfair and it is divisive.
