There seems to be two assumptions here that I would question:

1. The standup is the ideal way to sync up; ergo, if the standup is not effective, the challenge is to filter out people (by not hiring them) who will not be engaged in the standup.

2. Developers actually _need_ to sync up every day.

I don't think either of those are true!
