The idea that students don’t need to learn to write longhand is idiotic. I take notes in every meeting — I am not going to sit across from a CIO and type into my laptop. Without taking notes, I don’t have a record of the conversation — I forget details, names, etc. And printing is too slow.

I agree that writing longhand taps into the brain in a different way. When I need to think deeply, I take a pad and mechanical pencil, and sit by a window. I first create in my mind, and then I write my thoughts down — often in a non-linear way, with arrows interconnecting ideas — try doing that on a laptop.

But when I am finally ready to produce content, I turn to the laptop. That’s after the ideas have been created. I don’t think of good ideas sitting at my laptop. It numbs my creativity.
