SpaceX intentionally tries things before they are “ready”. The old approach of validating everything through analysis and simulation beforehand is actually more expensive than building several of your “best guesses”, trying them, and then analyzing what happened. No simulation or prior analysis is as accurate as an actual test. SpaceX calls this a “hardware rich” approach. It is an Agile technique applied to hardware. They use this approach with their engines and their vehicles. Having some failures along the way is expected. There is no “schedule” for what SpaceX is doing: there is only a “rolling wave plan”, which changes every time they test something and then pivot based on the results.
