"old guy thinking"

That's pretty offensive.

I am usually more up to date than most of the young people in organizations. Usually more physically fit as well.

My work is in organizational culture, Agile, and DevOps. I was the founder of the Agile 2 movement. I am not "out of date". I look at this objectively. Agile 2 is based on learning theory, cognitive science, and established models of leadership.

My advice about phones and interruptions comes mostly from cognitive science. I suggest reading "Thinking Fast and Slow" by Daniel Kahneman (a Nobel Laureate). Push notifications are very destructive for focus.

And I repeat, then in every organization I have been in, people carry their laptops around. Phones suck by comparison. These are people doing real work: they need to stay in touch, but they also need to organize things in file systems, compose documents, edit wikis, and many tasks that are best done with a keyboard.

I was an early adopter of pen-based systems. In 1994 I had a pen-based computer. (What were you doing in 1994?) I am not stuck in "old paradigms". I have always been an early adopter. But an objective look at keyboard-less systems will tell you that one is not as productive for doing real work that way. I know - I have tried it. When I was CTO of a company from 1995-2001, I carried around a newer pen-based system. A keyboard is needed for real work.
