I was laid off (is that how you spell it?) three times in my career. Each time was one of the happiest days of my life ;-)
A layoff is often the end of a situation that is unsustainable. Ending it is a good thing.
One time when I was laid off, I told the CTO, "I just did the impossible and saved the project!" His reply was something like, "I had not looked at it that way, and you are right. But we have to reduce costs because we are trying to get acquired, and you are one of our highest paid people".
Business should be conducted with empathy and consideration, but in the end, business decisions are not personal. They can't be.
