I think we should be cautious about forcing something on everyone in a group. Some people benefit from group practices, but others do not.

When I have been in teams, the standup had a very negative effect on me, for reasons that were independent of how it was conducted. It interrupted me, it sapped my energy (because it pulled me into a social situation), and a 15 minute standup ended up costing me about a hour of focus. And it split my morning into two less productive halves.

Also, the Agile community carries a pervasive assumption that "group is better", and "pair is better". It is not for everyone. I work best alone, because I can think deeply. Working with someone else destroys my focus.

But I realize that many people benefit from group activities like standups. That is a good thing. We need to give people agency, and allow them to attend, or not.
