“I never imagined a world where I would be represented by someone who looks like me.”

Hmmm. The woman in the photo looks like she could be from next door.

Is the author saying that native Americans were peaceful and Earth-loving? The evidence seems to differ. Indeed, tribes of Mexico were bloodthirsty and ruthless.

It is tragic that native Americans lost their land to Europeans. However, this is how the history of all of humanity has been: one tribe taking from another. Most of Europe has changed hands a hundred times. So has Asia. The Americas are not the only place that have seen conquest — the whole world has. That does not mean that we should try to figure out who the people were who were defeated by Ghengis Khan and try to get them represented in public office. In fact, native Americans came from Asia — they were not even indigenous to the Americas.

All that matters is who is here today. Yesterday is gone. No one today bears any responsibility for what their ancestors did, nor does anyone deserve any inheritance of what their ancestors had.

It is a good thing that American tribes have representation, because they are here today; not because of any kinship with people who are now gone.
