I agree. People are confused about free speech.
1. Social media and paid advertising amplify certain voices. That's not "free speech" - that's mass advocacy. Not the same thing. It is inherently unfair and biased in favor of the special interests or the person with the wide following. Free speech is supposed to be protection from being silenced - not a guarantee of one's right to broadcast to millions.
2. Democracy is not fair. Under democracy, the majority can vote to subjugate a minority. We need to stop equating democracy with "fair" or "equitable".
3. Twitter has become a public space. It needs to be either spit up or (better) truned into a utility. Having a company control such a widespread communication pipe is a recipe for bias.
4. Social media's algorithms are obscure and are designed to amplify emotion - not a good recipe for rational discourse. We need to do something about those algorithms. My preference: shut down the use of algorithms that choose what to show you, unless you explicitly click a link that says something like "show me what YOU think I might like". But by default, everyone should be shown the same things.
