We have way too many people today. In order for the Earth's ecosystem to be stable with 8 billion people we need to take extreme measures. If there were only 2 billion, we would not have to take extreme measures.

I don't think that the scenarios require reducing individuality, mainly because people will become of little importance in the economy, and so no one will care what people do.
