Hi Max.
You are right that Musk is not a scientist. He views himself as an engineer. SpaceX doesn't have any scientific goals. Their goal is to settle Mars. That's not science.
The thing is, SpaceX has done what NASA was unwilling to do, and unable to do. NASA has contracted for the SLS - a huge 1970s style waste of money. The idea of reusability was Musk's. Analysis has shown that SpaceX spends ten times less than traditional NASA contractors when building a system. And Boeing's space. capsule has still not sent anyone to orbit.
SpaceX gets results. It is undoubtedly profitable because it has been driving its competitors out of business. United Launch Alliance is looking for a buyer.
I am not a Musk fan. But he gets results. I am a fan of that. And he primary goal - to make human multiplanetary, happens to be a goal that I share. I feel that NASA and the US government has let us down. SpaceX revived the industry. They proved that a private company can do this. Now we see lots of space startups. That is because SpaceX showed investors that it can be done.
Musk has transformed two entire industries - transportation and space. Both extremely difficult. Both littered with failed startups. It is breathtaking what he has done.
But I don't like his politics, or his tweets.
I don't think he is a narcissist. That is a label commonly hurled at wealthy people. Musk is goal oriented. A narcissist has a big house and all that stuff. Musk has only one expensive possession: his airplane, which he uses to travel between his various companies. That's not a narcissist.
I think that Musk has a very low sensitivity to individuals. He cares about humanity, but he is unable to relate well to people. But that is not a surprise, given that he claims to have Asperger Syndrome.
I'm not defending him. I simply want SpaceX to succeed. Their dream is one of my dreams.
