Hi Kevin. It will never be a substitute; just as living in Alaska is no substitute for San Diego.

The reason for doing this is not to replace Earth. The main reason is to expand outward, in every way. Plus, civilization on Earth will eventually collapse - perhaps in a horrible way, and perhaps sooner than we think. It might be wise to have some outposts.
