David, you are a natural born engineer. Yes, programmers should be trained as engineers - software engineers. There used to be a culture of software engineering in the field, but it has largely been lost. That's why so many things don't work anymore. Perhaps it will return. Today's systems are distributed real time systems - that requires engineering.
