As a former nuclear engineer, I see these new reactor designs as breakthrough, but I feel that the nuclear industry should be regulated to ensure that safe designs are used, and that designs are used that do not require weapons-grade fuel, and that fuel is used that cannot later be used to create a dirty bomb - with reasonable assurance.
The industry is not up to the task of overseeing nuclear material if that material is not nearly fail-safe.
I think small nuclear has potential for places where there is less sunlight, or when rapid deployment is required or in remote areas. And nuclear is definitely the way to go for spacecraft and space outposts. For mainstream residential on Earth, I am hoping we will see more local solar, using better materials in solar cells, batteries, and converters to avoid rare earths and to encourage recycling.
