A lot of very interesting information in this article.

I would argue that colonizing these worlds does not have to be - should not be - sequential.

Also, Mars has more resources than the Moon. And I am also wondering if a magnetic field can be generated by placing an array of charged capacitors in the right places: Mars rotates, so if the stored charges are sufficient, the rotation will generate a magnetic field. I have not done the calculation, but the charging would only have to be done once, so the "work" involved would be fixed - not ongoing.
